THE MEDITATIONS OF HANEE, THE CUSTOMER FROM KOREA

We are often inspired by the stories of people we meet along our journey. And we would like to share them with you.

Our team is launching an editorial where we will delve into the stories of individuals who resonate with the philosophy of our brand.

The first hero of this series is our customer from Seoul, Hanee, who owns her own cloth brand. We spoke to her and learned about her values, traditions, and the places that inspire her.

What craft do you practice in your daily life?
“I take great delight in practicing quilt embroidery. I embarked on this journey with the intention of fostering tranquility and composure during my leisure hours. This craft serves as both a creative outlet and a means of relieving stress, aiding in the sharpening of my focus and concentration. Through quilt embroidery, I am afforded the opportunity to freely express my creativity by seamlessly combining fabric pieces and selecting vibrant hues. Additionally, it instills in me qualities of patience through the intricate process of sewing. As I gaze towards the future, I eagerly anticipate continuing this fulfilling craft for years to come, as it consistently brings me a profound sense of fulfillment and tranquility.”
Share a vivid childhood memory connected to something that shaped who you are today?
“A cherished childhood memory that shaped my current self is my mother’s hand-drawn paper doll play. Crafting paper dolls, designing clothes, and adding embellishments brought me immense joy and fostered my creativity.”
Tell us about family traditions that are observed only in your family?
“In my family, we uphold a special tradition known as "family reunions." During occasions like Christmas or Chuseok, our entire family, including siblings, parents, grandparents, uncles, and aunts, gather to spend quality time together either at home or at our family vacation home.

These gatherings play a pivotal role in strengthening familial bonds, fostering love and respect, and maintaining harmony within the family. The tradition becomes even more meaningful as we come together to prepare special meals and exchange gifts on these occasions.”
What does the concept of identity mean to you? Have you ever contemplated it regarding yourself?
“Identity, to me, is a multifaceted concept through which individuals perceive and define themselves. It encompasses values, beliefs, personality traits, interests, and experiences, shaping one's understanding of self and interactions with the world.

I consider identity as a perpetual inquiry, a continuous exploration of selfhood. While it may seem static, our identities evolve as we learn, discover, and navigate life's experiences.”
What have you recently discovered or learned that has inspired you?
“The central theme of the 24SS project is "Ageless," a concept that deeply resonates with me. It stemmed from a spontaneous insight I had during a casual gathering with close acquaintances. Among this group of friends, spanning ages from their twenties to late forties, some of my closest companions are in their forties. I firmly believe in the importance of embracing a mindset free from age-related limitations. While Korean society still clings to prejudices and stereotypes about age, I advocate for open-minded communication and interaction, irrespective of age. It's crucial not to succumb to the notion that age restricts one's ability to take on new challenges or to create divisions based solely on age. I highly value the attitude of embracing one's personality and values regardless of age and strive to promote this mindset.”
Tell us what type of art you've been interested in for a long time and why?
“There's a long-standing interest in the traditional costumes of different countries.
Traditional clothing is an important branch of art that reflects a country's culture and history. They reflect a country's historical background, regional characteristics, beliefs, and way of life, and play an important role in understanding its culture. For example, Korean Hanbok is not only beautiful in its own unique way, but also reflects the lifestyle and values of the Korean people, and even the seasons and climate. In this way, traditional clothing is an art in itself, but in a broader sense, it can be considered a branch of art that plays an important role in understanding a country's culture and history, which I think is very enriching and beautiful.”

Which places have left a mark in your memory and why?

“PKM Gallery holds a special place in my heart as one of my favorite art venues in Korea.

What captivates me most is its cozy café, where I can indulge in a cup of tea while immersing myself in the artwork. Beyond merely appreciating the pieces on display, the experience allows me to cherish and savor life's simple pleasures.

The ambiance of the gallery takes on a new dimension when it rains. The gentle patter of raindrops against the windows adds an emotional depth to the surroundings, enhancing the connection between art and nature. Amidst this backdrop, I find solace and tranquility, making each visit a truly enriching experience.”
