PUMKINS INTO DOLLS
special places of uzbekistan:
THE PUMPKIN MUSEUM
The Pumpkin Museum is owned by a lovely couple of retired school teachers Bakhtiyor and Dildora. After devoting most of their lives to teaching children, the couple decided retirement wasn't for sitting still – they needed a way to be useful for their people.
The idea came by itself: why not turn their own 300-year-old house into a museum?
“When we decided to start the museum, we didn’t know what it would house. At that time, we happened to get some decorative pumpkin seeds – then, one of our neighbors suggested we grow and paint them”.
As the pumpkins grew, Bakhtiyor and Dildora used the harvest in a truly amazing way: they drew faces and added dresses, turning the pumpkins into dolls. The dolls portray famous characters, the couple’s friends, and sometimes even the guests themselves.
“We strived to create pumpkins that would attract eyes like magnets”.
During museum tours, the couple passionately guides visitors through the fascinating process of cultivating gourds and transforming them into beautiful dolls. In addition, all guests are treated to puppet theater performances and workshops for children, providing a unique opportunity to bring their imagination to life – indeed, there is no better gift than a handmade masterpiece that you can take back home.
“Nowadays, children are often told not to express themselves in public. We, on the contrary, aspire to cultivate an atmosphere where they can let loose – shout, sing and play. Sometimes I play my folk instruments, and the kids revel in joy, singing along. We tailor our programs to each group, ensuring variety to keep the children engaged. If they’re tired, we always offer a moment to rest – that’s what we were taught during our psychology courses”.
The museum’s primary mission is to create an everlasting memory for every guest that happens to visit it.
“That’s why we end our tours with a pleasant conversation around the table. When our guests leave the museum smiling, it inspires us to keep adding new layers of magic, new reasons for them to return”.
The couple’s wish for everyone in the coming year is good health – after all, it's only through healthy eyes that we truly see the beauty around us.
